From Strangers to Friends: The Caravan Experience

We ended our North to Alaska 2025 Caravan on Sept. 12th. What an amazing and wonderful 63 days we had with this diverse and adventurous group. Lasting friendships were formed, as we experienced the beauty of Alaska and Canada together. It was sad to part from all these new friends. Tears were shed and vows were made to stay in touch as we travel down the road.

We formed a thread on our social media called “On the way home” and we’ve stayed connected as we make our way toward our “sticks and bricks” homes. Many have daily shared pictures of wonderful campgrounds and the beauty of the surrounding area.

Upon reflection, I remember how tentative I was to sign up for this caravan; yet if I’d allowed my fears of traveling 63 days with strangers to gain strength, I’d have missed out on this trip of a lifetime. I would have truly missed out on forming connections with many wonderful people who love to travel as much as Steve, and I do.

FOMO is fear of missing out, but I do think this is different. It would’ve been more of the love of the comfort of the known would have created a smaller world, limiting my joy of shared experiences with a group of adventure-minded people.

The point of this blog is to encourage everyone to lean into small adventures; and, occasionally lean into bigger adventures. Don’t let your love of the comfortable become a limitation. Lean into the discomfort of traveling with strangers who will become friends. Lean into the discomforts of travel to experience the wonders of the world. We will be adventuring again with about 20 of our new friends next year as we signed up for a “Northern Lights and Polar Bear Caravan” through the Airstream Club International. My world will once again be enhanced by a trip that I would’ve never thought I would like to experience. I hope these thoughts will encourage you to lean into your discomfort of the unknown and embrace those adventures both small and large
