Spinning Up for Alaska

17 June 2025

Having recently completed a shakedown trip for our new truck, we are now in the last 10 days of preparation for our Alaska journey. Below is the plan and it should take about 4 months to complete.

The main question we keep asking ourselves is, “do we have enough _________?” or “do we need ____________?”. Honestly for a trip like this it can be a bit overwhelming or taxing. But, we take on a little bit every day. At this point I’m convinced we will not be missing anything absolutely critical.

We are doing this in a modified 2022 Airstream Globetrotter 23FBT. That is a 24′ (well, 23′ and 9″ anyway) streamlined RV travel trailer. Modifications include energy upgrades from Airstream Nuts & Bolts: 270 Watts of solar panels, 400 AmpH battery bank, 3000 Watt inverter, a Cummins Onan 2500 W propane generator mounted underneath (so quiet!), a 3″ lift kit, Spare tire kit shifted to underneath back end behind the wheels, internalized StarLink modem, as well as AppleTV, Custom dinette table from Rob Knoll, AirKrafters erPods replacing the AC ducts, AirKrafters water inlet with quick connect, a nickel finish quick connect system for outside shower, new toilet seat (much closer to comfort we have in our house), upgraded dinette cushions, upgraded mattresses, with underlying wood support for both twin beds (thanks to Matthew Hughes!), and many other much smaller details. The name of our RV is EPSILON and we continue to have many small (and large) positive adventures in her!

Epsilon weighs roughly 6500 lbs and has a hitch weight of 840 lbs. Epsilon is now pulled by a 2025 turbo diesel Ram 2500 Laramie we’ve named “Smaug”. It’s definitely overkill for this small trailer BUT I strongly desired to have a significant amount of safety margin for our travels.
